MacEwan University and University of Montreal win Canadian University Soccer Championships

The 2021 Canadian University Soccer Championships finals took place on Sunday. In the men’s gold medal game from Ottawa, Ontario, the University of Montreal Carabins defeated the University of Carleton Ravens 5-4 on penalties after going to penalties deadlocked at two goals apiece. In the women’s gold medal game from Sydney, Nova Scotia, the MacEwan University Griffins defeated the University of Trinity Western Spartans 3-2 after also going to penalties deadlocked at two goals apiece.

The Carabins win over the Ravens was extremely dramatic. The Ravens were leading the game 1-0, when Quentin Paumier tied the game at one goal apiece in the 90th minute. Then Julien Bruce put the Carabins up 2-1 in extra time before the Ravens responded with an equalizer. In the penalty kicks, the Ravens missed the only shot of the 10 attempts.

Montreal previously won the 2018 Canadian Men’s University Soccer Championship. In the final three years ago, the Carabins beat the University of Cape Breton 2-1 from Vancouver, British Columbia.

In the 2021 University Men’s Soccer Championship, the Carabins beat the University of Victoria Vikes 4-3 on penalties after being deadlocked at one. Then in the semifinals, the Carabins beat the  University of Guelph Gryphons 1-0 in extra time.

The Griffins won their first Canadian University Women’s Soccer Championship in school history. The Griffins goal scorers in the final were Raeghan McCarthy and Salma Kamel of Edmonton, Alberta. In the penalties, the Griffins scorers were Erin Van Dolder of Edmonton, Hannah Supina of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Grace Mwasalla of Chatham, Ontario. In the 2021 University Women’s Soccer Championship, the Griffins beat Queen’s 2-1 in the quarterfinals, and then the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds 1-0 in the semifinals.
