Lily-Rose Nolet wins silver in a Karate 1 Serie A event in Egypt

According to The Canadian News on Sunday, Lily-Rose Nolet of Gatineau, Quebec won the silver medal in the Women’s Serie A Karate 1 event in Cairo, Egypt on Sunday. Nolet competed in the women’s 68+ kilogram division. What was most impressive about Nolet’s silver medal is the fact this was only her second international competition.

Nolet reached the final before losing to Egyptian gold medalist Habiba Helmy. Theodosia Giamouki of Cyprus and Misara Baiomy of Egypt shared the bronze medal.

In a remarkable showcase of defense leading up to the final, Nolet did not surrender a single point before losing to Helmy in the gold medal match. She beat Kahina Amrouche of Algeria 6-0 in round one, Samira Mujezinovic of Germany 2-0 in round two, Pola Giorgetti of Luxembourg 3-0 in round three, and Baiomy 3-0 in round four. in the gold medal bout however, it was Nolet who was unable to score a single point, as she was blanked 3-0 by Helmy.

Karate made its Olympic debut at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021. It should be noted that there is no women’s 68+ kilogram division on the Olympic stage. The categories for women are kata, 55 kilograms, 61 kilograms and more than 61 kilograms. Nolet will be hoping to represent Canada in women’s karate at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
