
Leylah Annie Fernandez of Montreal, Quebec upset Mirra Andreeva of Russia 6-1, 6-4 in the third round of the 2026 National Bank Open in Toronto, Ontario on Friday. It was the first time this season that Fernandez beat a player ranked in the top 10 in the world. Andreeva, who won the French Open for her first career major title, is ranked fifth in the world. Fernandez, is ranked 30th in Toronto, and 34th in the world.
In Fernandez’s win over Andreeva, a key statistic was winning percentage on first serve. Fernandez was at 89% and Andreeva was at 66%. Fernandez also broke Andreeva four times in five opportunities.
This was Fernandez’s second win in four opportunities against Andreeva. Fernandez previously beat Andreeva 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the second round of Hong Kong in 2023.
Next up for Fernandez is the 11th seed Naomi Osaka of Japan. Osaka has won four major titles in her career. She was victorious at the 2018 and 2020 United States Open, and the 2019 and 2021 Australian Open.
This will be the third meeting ever between Fernandez and Osaka. Fernandez won 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 in the third round of the 2021 United States Open. That was the major Fernandez reached the final. Osaka then won 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, in the first round of the 2025 Wuhan Open in China.
