Katie Vincent wins Olympic gold in the women’s C1 200 metres

Katie Vincent of Mississauga, Ontario won the gold medal in the women’s C1 200 metres at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris on Saturday. This was Vincent’s third career medal in canoeing at the Olympic Games, as she also won bronze in the women’s C2 500 metres at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021 with Laurence Vincent-Lapointe of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, and bronze in the women’s C2 500 metres at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris alongside Sloan Mackenzie of Halifax, Nova Scotia.

In the women’s C1 200 metre final, Vincent posted a winning time of 44.12 seconds, which turned out to be a world record. Nevin Harrison of the United States won the silver medal with a time of 44.13 seconds and Yarisleidis Cirilo of Cuba won the bronze medal with a time of 44.36 seconds. Vincent reached the podium by 0.66 seconds over Anita Jacome of Spain, who was in fourth place at 44.78 seconds.

Vincent was the first Canadian woman and fourth Canadian to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games in canoeing. She followed Frank Amyot of Thornhill, Ontario in the men’s C1 1000 metres at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Larry Cain of Toronto, Ontario in the men’s C1 500 metres at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, and Adam Van Koeverden of Toronto, Ontario in the men’s K1 500 metres at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
