It was an historic Major League Baseball game for Cleveland Guardians first baseman Josh Naylor of Mississauga, Ontario on Monday. In a 12-9 Guardians win over the Chicago White Sox, Naylor became the first player ever to record eight runs batted in starting in the eighth inning of a Major League Baseball regular season game according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
With the Guardians trailing the White Sox 5-1 in the eighth inning, Naylor had a two-out RBI double which scored Steven Kwan. With the RBI, Cleveland trailed Chicago 5-2.
Then after the White Sox took an 8-2 lead on the Guardians thanks to a three-run home run by A.J. Pollock, the Guardians scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game at eight. A major reason for the impressive comeback was the hitting power of Naylor, who hit a dramatic, two-out grand slam off of White Sox closer and former Blue Jays reliever Liam Hendriks. Then after the White Sox and Guardians each scored a run in the 10th inning, Naylor hit his second homer run of the game with a three-run blast in the 11th inning, to put Cleveland up 12-9.
On the season, Naylor is batting .338 with four runs and 21 runs batted in. The Guardians are in second place in the AL Central with a record of 15 wins and 14 losses.
