There are four teams left at the 2024 Scotties Tournament of Hearts at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary, Alberta. On Friday, six teams began the day, but two teams have now been eliminated.
In the Page 1/2 qualifier games Friday afternoon, Manitoba’s Jennifer Jones defeated Alberta’s Selena Sturmay 8-4, and Ontario’s Rachel Homan beat Team Canada’s Kerri Einarson 8-4. Then in the Page 3/4 qualifier knockout games, Manitoba’s Kate Cameron beat Canada 9-4, and Sturmay defeated Manitoba’s Kaitlyn Lawes 8-5.
Due to the results on Friday, we know that Homan will play Jones in the 1-2 game Saturday night, and Cameron will play Sturmay in the 3-4 game Saturday afternoon.
One reason for Alberta’s win over Manitoba is because they were able to put pressure on their opponent in the early stages of the game. Sturmay was leading Cameron 6-1 after five ends.
“I think we did a really good job on capitalizing on misses and starting off strong, which helped us breeze through the rest of the game,” said the 25-year-old skip from Edmonton. “I was really pleased with how our team was able to bounce back (after a loss to Jones).”
Cameron’s win was noteworthy because Einarson had won four Scotties in a row.
“Obviously they are a great team,” states Cameron. “They have had a wonderful season and wonderful last four seasons. We knew we had to play them at some point this week. We were a little nervous to play them now. We were strong in the second half (stole six straight points) and it paid off.”
