According to the Canadian Press on Wednesday, Major League Soccer came out with its list of the 25 best players of all-time. Among the players selected were Canadian forward and attacking midfielder Dewayne De Rosario of Scarborough, Ontario, and former Toronto FC midfielder Sebastian Giovinco of Turin, Italy.
De Rosario had 104 goals and 77 assists in 343 Major League Soccer games from 2001 to 2014. In those 14 seasons he played for the San Jose Earthquakes, Houston Dynamo, Toronto FC, the New York Red Bulls, and D.C. United.
Four times De Rosario won the MLS Cup (2001 and 2003 with the Earthquakes, and 2006 and 2007 with the Dynamo). Twice De Rosario was the MLS Cup most valuable player (2001 and 2007), and in 2011, was the MLS Most Valuable Player. Interestingly, when De Rosario took home MLS MVP honours, he played with three different teams. Overall, he had 16 goals and 12 assists.
Giovinco played four seasons with Toronto FC from 2015 to 2018. In 114 games, he had 68 goals and 52 assists. Giovinco’s finest season came in 2015, when he won the MLS MVP Award. That season he had 22 goals and 16 assists, both career highs while Giovinco was in Major League Soccer. In 2017, Giovinco also was part of the Toronto FC team which won its first ever MLS Cup in franchise history. In the championship game in Toronto, Toronto FC beat the Seattle Sounders 2-0.
