The Anaheim Ducks have hired Joel Quenneville of Windsor, Ontario as their new head coach according to the Associated Press on Thursday. The announcement took place after Quenneville was among three Chicago Blackhawks personnel suspended by the National Hockey League for three years for mishandling allegations made by former Chicago Blackhawks player Kyle Beach of North Vancouver, British Columbia against Blackhawks video coach Brad Aldrich.
Quenneville replaces Greg Cronin, who was fired on April 19. The firing took place even though the Ducks had a 21 point improvement from a year before.
In his National Hockey League coaching career, Quenneville has coached a quarter of a century from 1996 to 2022 with the St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche, Blackhawks and Florida Panthers. He has a record of 969 wins, 572 regulation losses, 77 ties, and 150 losses in extra time for a winning percentage of .612. Quenneville won three Stanley Cups with the Blackhawks in 2010, 2013, and 2015, and won the Jack Adams Award while with the Blues in 2000.
As a NHL player, Quenneville was a defenseman with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Rockies, New Jersey Devils, Hartford Whalers and Washington Capitals from 1978 to 1991. In 803 NHL regular season games, he had 54 goals and 136 assists for 190 points. Quenneville was a -85 with 705 penalty minutes, 29 power-play points, 12 shorthanded points, six game-winning goals, and 748 shots on goal.
