Damian Warner wins men’s heptathlon gold at 2022 World Athletics Indoor Championships

Canadian Olympic gold medalist Damian Warner of London, Ontario won the gold medal in the men’s heptathlon on Saturday at the 2022 World Athletics Indoor Championship in Belgrade, Serbia. Warner, who won the gold medal in the men’s decathlon at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, won his second career medal in the men’s heptathlon at the World Athletics Indoor Championship. The first medal was a silver at the 2018 World Athletics Indoor Championship in Birmingham, England.

The gold medal for Warner in Belgrade was the only medal for Canada in the World Athletics Indoor Championship. It should be noted that Warner won an event in Belgrade that does not take place at the Olympic Games. The multi-sport heptathlon event at the World Athletics Indoor Championship consists of the 60 metres, long jump, shot put, high jump, 60 metre hurdles, pole vault, and 1000 metres. The multi-sport decathlon event at the Olympic Games consists of the 100 metres, 100 metre hurdles, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 metres, 1500 metres, discus, pole vault, and javelin.

In Belgrade, Warner won the gold medal with 6489 points. Simon Ehammer of Switzerland won the silver medal with 6363 points. Ashley Moloney of Australia won the bronze medal with 6344 points. Warner earned a medal by 298 points over Hans-Christian Hausenberg of Estonia, who had 6191 points. Warner placed first in the 60 metres with a time of 6.68 seconds, first in the long jump with a jump of 8.05 metres, fourth in the shot put with a throw of 14.89 metres, ninth in the high jump wth a jump of 1.99 metres, first in the 60 metre hurdles with a time of 7.61 seconds, fifth in the pole vault with a jump of 4.90 metres, and third in the 1000 metres with a time of 2:39.56.
