Connor McDavid records first hat trick of 2022-23 NHL season

Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid of Richmond Hill, Ontario recorded the very first hat trick of the 2022-23 National Hockey League regular season on Wednesday. He achieved the mark in a 5-3 Oilers win over the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta. For McDavid, it was his 12th career NHL hat trick.

McDavid’s first goal of the game was on the power-play and pulled the Oilers within one goal, as Vancouver maintained a 3-2 lead. He scored from Zach Hyman of Toronto, Ontario, and Leon Draisaitl at 14:01 of the second period. McDavid then scored the game-winning goal at 15:01 of the third period from Hyman, and then into an empty net on the power-play from Evander Kane of Vancouver, British Columbia and Darnell Nurse of Hamilton, Ontario.

The other two Oilers goal scorers on the night were Nurse and Draisaitl. McDavid actually had a four point game, as he had an assist on a goal by Draisaitl. McDavid was one of three Canadians on the Oilers with a multi-point game as Nurse had one goal and one assist, and Hyman had two assists.

McDavid also is tied for the lead in the NHL in scoring with four points. He is tied with David Pastrnak of the Boston Bruins (one goal and three assists), and Mikko Rantanen of the Colorado Avalanche (four assists).
