
According to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun on Monday, Ottawa Senators forward Claude Giroux of Hearst, Ontario was named the NHL First Star of the Week from January 23 to 29, 2023. In three games, he had four goals and three assists for seven points. Giroux was also a +2 with three power-play points, one game-winning goal, 11 shots on goal, one hit, two blocked shots, and 20 faceoff wins.
Giroux had a multi-point game in each of the Senators’ three contests. He had one goal and one assist for two points in the Senators’s 2-1 win over the New York Islanders on January 25, one goal and one assist for two points in the Senators’s 6-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on January 27, and two goals and one assist for three points in the Senators’s 5-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens on January 28.
On the season, Giroux now has 19 goals and 28 assists for 47 points in 47 games. He is a -2 with 12 penalty minutes, 18 power-play points, three game-winning goals, one shorthanded point, 118 shots on goal, 377 faceoff wins, 19 blocked shots, 37 hits, 28 takeaways, and 23 giveaways. The game-winning goals came in a 3-2 Senators win over the Los Angeles Kings on November 27, in a 6-2 Senators win over the Detroit Red Wings on December 17, and in the win over the Islanders last week. Giroux’s shorthanded point was an assist on a goal by Austin Watson in the win over the Red Wings on December 17.
