Cavalry FC based in Calgary, Alberta, have won the 2024 North Star Cup. On Saturday in Spruce Meadows, Cavalry defeated Hamilton Forge FC in the championship game of the Canadian Premier League 2-1. The Cavalry goal scorers in the Canadian professional men’s soccer league final were Tobias Warschewski and Sergio Camargo. Warschewski scored on a penalty in the 32nd minute to put Cavalry up 1-0, and then Camargo scored the game-winning goal in the 38th minute to put Cavalry up 2-0.
Among Cavalry’s starting 11 were four Canadians. They were midfielder Fraser Aird of Toronto, Ontario, defender Callum Montgomery of Nanaimo, British Columbia, midfielder Shamit Shome of Edmonton, Alberta, and midfielder Diego Gutierrez of Greenfield Park, Quebec.
This was the second time the CPL champion won the North Star Cup. Last year, Forge FC beat Cavalry FC 2-1 at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton. The first four CPL champions won the North Star Shield. Hamilton Forge FC had won four of the first five CPL titles prior to Saturday.
The CPL deserves high praise for selling out Calgary’s ATCO Field. There were 7,000 spectators in attendance. The CPL also deserves high praise for coming to terms with CBC Sports to bring the championship game. CBC will also bring the Vanier Cup in two weeks from Kingston, Ontario.
