Montreal Caarabins quarterback Jonathan Senecal of Montreal, Quebec has won the 2023 Hec Crighton Trophy. The trophy is presented to the top university football player in Canada each year.

Senecal becomes the first player from the University of Montreal to win the award. It has been presented every year since 1967.

In 2023, Senecal completed 160 of 230 passes for 2215 passing yards, with 15 touchdown passes and four interceptions. However, he was marvelous on the ground too. Senecal had 394 rushing yards and six touchdown runs.

Senecal was presented with the award at the Canadian University Football Awards Banquet in Kingston, Ontario on Thursday. Kingston is hosting the 2023 Vanier Cup on Saturday. The Carabins will be playing the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds.

It its interesting that the Thunderbirds have an American quarterback in Garrett Rooker of League City, Texas. Rooker is a Kinesiology student, while Senecal is a business administration student.

In 2022, the Carabins have won 10 of 11 games. Their only loss came to Concordia University by a score of 16-14 on October 28. It was the last game of the Carabins regular season. Since then they have clobbered Sherbrooke 54-3 in the Dunsmore Cup semifinals, beaten the Laval Rouge et Or 12-6 in the Dunsmore Cup and the Western Mustangs 29-3 in the Uteck Bowl.
