Canadians contribute to Blue Bombers’s dominant win over Elks

Week 18 is now in the books in the Canadian Football League, and it was a dominant weekend performance by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Winnipeg clinched first place in the West with a 48-11 win over the Edmonton Elks on Saturday. With the loss, the Elks have been eliminated from playoff contention.

Two Canadians had significant performances for the Blue Bombers in their 37-point win. Running back Brady Oliveira of Winnipeg, Manitoba had 14 rushes for 61 yards and one touchdown, along with two catches for 46 yards and another major score. Meanwhile, Blue Bombers wide receiver Nic Demski of Winnipeg had five catches for 92 yards and one touchdown, along with three rushes for 22 yards.

Demski had a 31-yard touchdown catch from Zach Collaros to open the scoring at 3:34 of the first quarter. Oliveira’s receiving touchdown was 24 yards from quarterback Dakota Prukop, which put the Blue Bombers up 27-8 with 8:20 left in the first half. Oliveira then had a three-yard rushing touchdown, 38 seconds into the fourth quarter, which put Winnipeg up 34-11.

The other Canadian to record a touchdown on a winning team this past weekend also came on Saturday. Toronto Argonauts wide receiver Tommy Nield of Guelph, Ontario had a game-winning 37-yard touchdown catch from Mcleod Bethel-Thompson with three minutes and 12 seconds left to close out the scoring as the Toronto Argonauts beat the British Columbia Lions 23-20. With the win, the Argonauts improved to a record of nine wins and six losses, and lead the East Division.
