In an interesting decision on Thursday, Curling Canada, in association with USports and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association, decided to carry on with the Canadian University Curling Championships and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Curling Championships for men and women this weekend from Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. The decision was made even though the Coronavirus has shutdown many sporting events for the foreseeable future.

At the University level, the University of New Brunswick Reds is currently undefeated with a record of four wins and zero losses in women’s curling. The New Brunswick skip is Justine Comeau of Fredericton.

At the men’s university level, there is currently a three-way tie for first place at four wins and zero losses. The tied teams are the University of Wilfrid Laurier Hawks (skipped by Matthew Hall of Surrey, British Columbia), the University of Alberta Golden Bears (skipped by Karsten Sturmay of Leduc, Alberta), and the University of Dalhousie Tigers (skipped by Matthew Manuel of Halifax, Nova Scotia). Sturmay is the most high profile name as he won a silver medal for Canada in men’s curling at the 2019 Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk, Russia and reached the final of the Alberta Men’s Curling Championship (the Boston Pizza Cup) in Westlock, Alberta, before losing to Brendan Bottcher of Edmonton, Alberta 7-6.

At the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association National Men’s Curling Championships, the Fanshawe Falcons have a perfect record at four wins and zero losses. On the women’s side, there is a three-way tie for first place at three wins and one loss between Concordia College, Humber College and Douglas College.
