Canada wins nine medals in a short track speed skating World Cup in Netherlands

Team Canada won nine medals on the weekend in a short track speed skating World Cup in Dordrecht, Netherlands. On Saturday, Canadian Olympic silver medalist Kim Boutin of Sherbrooke, Quebec won the gold medal in the women’s 1000 metre short track speed skating event, Canadian Olympic gold medalist Steven Dubois of Laval, Quebec won the gold medal in the men’s 1000 metre short track speed skating event, Canadian Olympic gold medalist Pascal Dion of Montreal, Quebec won the silver medal in the men’s 1000 metre short track speed skating event, and William Dandjinou of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Rikki Doak of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canadian Olympic gold medalist Jordan Pierre-Gillies of Sherbrooke, Quebec and Courtney Sarault of Moncton, New Brunswick won silver in the mixed 2000 metre relay event. On Sunday, Boutin and Doak won silver and bronze respectively in the women’s 500 metres, Sarault won gold in the women’s 1000 metres, Dion won silver in the men’s 1000 metres, and Boutin, Doak, Sarault and Renee Marie Steenge of Brampton, Ontario won silver in the women’s 3000 metre relay. Boutin won the silver medal for Canada in the women’s 1000 metre event at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. Dion, Pierre-Gillies and Dubois won the gold medal for Canada in the men’s 5000 metre short track speed skating relay at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.

In the women’s 1000 metre short track speed skating event on Saturday, Boutin had a first place time of 1:29.807. Kristen Santos-Griswold of the United States won the silver medal with a time of 1:29.864. Xandra Velzeboer of the Netherlands won the bronze medal with a time of 1:29.968. Boutin reached the podium by .861 seconds over fellow Canadian Danae Blais of Chateauguay, Quebec, who had a fourth place time of 1:30.668.

In men’s 1000 metre short track speed skating event on Saturday, Dubois won the gold medal with a time of 1:24.532. Dion won the silver medal with a time of 1:24.659. Roberts Kruzbergs of Latvia won the bronze medal with a time of 1:24.682. Dubois reached the podium by 0.161 seconds and Dion reached the podium by 0.034 seconds over Tae Sung Kim of South Korea, who had a fourth place time of 1:24.693.

In the mixed 2000 metre short track speed skating event on Saturday, Canada had a second place time of 2:38.898. The Netherlands won the gold medal with a time of 2:38.811. Poland won the bronze medal with a time of 2:39.858. Canada reached the podium by 2.579 seconds over the United States which had a fourth place time of 2:41.477. In the World Cup mixed 2000 metre standings, Canada finished in fourth place with 260 points. South Korea was the World Cup champion with 380 points.

In the women’s 500 metre short track speed skating event on Sunday, Boutin won the silver medal with a time of 42.301. Doak won the bronze medal with a time of 42.397. Xandra Velzeboer of the Netherlands won the gold medal with a time of 42.02 seconds. Boutin reached the podium by .703 seconds over Corinne Stoddard of the United States and Doak reached the podium by .607 seconds over Stoddard, who had a fourth place time of 43.004 seconds. In the women’s 500 metre World Cup standings, Velzeboer was the champion with 426 points. Boutin was is in third place with 336 points and Doak was in fourth place with 324 points.

In the women’s 1000 metre short track speed skating event on Sunday, Sarault won the gold medal with a time of 1:32.930. Gilli Kim of South Korea won the silver medal with a time of 1:33.037. Suzanne Schulting of the Netherlands won the bronze medal with a time of 1:33.137. Sarault reached the podium by .347 seconds over Hanne Desmet of Belgium, who had a fourth place time of 1:33.277. In the World Cup women’s 1000 metre short track speed skating standings, Sarault finished in second with 360 points. Boutin finished in fourth with 284 points. Schulting was the World Cup women’s 1000 metre champion with 470 points.

In the men’s 1000 metres short track speed skating event on Sunday, Dion won the silver medal with a time of 1:25.514. Ji Won Park of South Korea won the gold medal with a time of 1:25.359. Luca Spechenhauser of Italy won the bronze medal with a time of 1:25.619. Dion earned a medal by 0.517 seconds over Jiahua Song of China, who had a fourth place time of 1:25.671. In the men’s 1000 metre World Cup short track speed skating standings, Dion was in second with 450 points and Dubois was in sixth with 230 points. The World Cup men’s 1000 metre champion was Park with 488 points.

In the women’s 3000 metre short track speed skating event on Sunday, Canada had a winning time of 4:13.541. Hungary won the silver medal with a time of 4:15.134. China won the bronze medal with a time of 4:15.201. Canada reached the podium by 1.859 seconds over Italy, which had a fourth place time of 4:15.24. In the World Cup standings for the women’s 3000 metres, Canada was the World Cup champion with 360 points. The Netherlands and South Korea tied for second with 340 points. The medals for Dion, Dubois, Sarault, Boutin, Doak, Steenge, Dandjinou, and Pierre-Gillies will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo.
