Team Canada won gold medals in boxing and cycling on Friday at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. Two gold medals came in boxing and one in cycling. The gold medals came from Tammara Thibeault of Saint-Geoges, Quebec in the women’s 75 kilogram boxing division, Wyatt Sanford of Kennetcook, Nova Scotia in the men’s 63.5 kilogram boxing division, and the men’s team pursuit cycling team. The Canadian team comprised of Chris Ernst of Kitchener, Ontario, Michael Foley of Milton, Ontario, Carson Mattern of Ancaster, Ontario, and Campbell Parrish and Sean Richardson of Vancouver, British Columbia.
In the women’s 75 kilogram boxing division, Thibeault beat Milena Jimenez of the Dominican Republic in the round of 16 when the referee stopped the contest. She then beat Maryelis Yriza of Venezuela 5-0 in the quarterfinals, Citlalli Ortiz of Mexico 5-0 in the semifinals, and silver medalist Atheyna Bylon of Panama 5-o in the final. Ortiz and Viviane Pereira of Brazil shared the bronze medals.
In the men’s 63.5 kilogram boxing division, Sanford beat Lazaro Salvarez of Cuba 5-0 in the round of 16, Luciano Amaya of Argentina 5-0 in the quarterfinals, Yuri Falcao of Brazil 5-0 in the semifinals, and silver medalist Miguel Martinez of Mexico 5-0 in the final. Falcao and Alexy de la Cruz of the Dominican Republic shared the bronze medal. While in cycling, Canada won the gold medal, Colombia won the silver medal and the United States won the bronze medal.
Team Canada won one more medal. Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson of Toronto, Ontario won silver in women’s beach volleyball. Canada has now won 87 medals (32 gold medals, 25 silver medals and 30 bronze medals), and are second behind the United States, who has won 152 medals.
