
Canadian athletes won bronze medals in world championship events in golf and curling on Sunday. At the 2022 World Matchplay Golf Championships in Austin, Texas, Corey Conners of Listowel, Ontario placed third. Also, at the 2022 Women’s World Curling Championships in Prince George, British Columbia, the Canadian team comprised of skip Kerri Einarson, third Val Sweeting, second Shannon Birchard, and lead Briane Meilleur, won Canada’s first medal at the Women’s World Curling Championship since 2018.
In golf, Conners was one of four golfers left to compete for the World Matchplay Golf Championship on Sunday. He was joined by Americans Dustin Johnson, Scottie Scheffler, and Kevin Kisner. In the semifinals, a key bogey on the 17th hole cost Conners the match against Kisner, and ended up losing by two. Conners’s opponent in the bronze medal match was Johnson, which Conners won 3 & 1. In the process, Conners became the first Canadian to ever win a medal at the World Matchplay Golf Championship. Scheffler beat Kisner 4 & 3, in the gold medal match.
In curling, Canada beat Denmark 9-8 in a very tight qualification match. The Canadians scored three points in the eighth end to take a 9-6 lead at the time. In the semifinals, Canada lost 9-6 to South Korea before beating Sweden 8-7 in 11 ends in the bronze medal game.
