Canada shuts out the United States 4-0 in Olympic men’s field hockey qualifying at the 2019 Pan American Games

Team Canada is off to a strong start in men’s field hockey at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima.The Canadians improved to a record of two wins and zero losses following a 4-0 shutout win over the United States on Thursday.

Gordon Johnston of Vancouver, British Columbia scored two Canadian goals from the penalty corner. The other Canadian players to register a goal were Mark Pearson of Vancouver, British Columbia and James Kirkpatrick of Victoria, British Columbia.

It was also a solid game for Canadian goaltender David Carter of Vancouver, British Columbia. Carter made his only save off an American shot from the penalty corner. The United States had six shots, but only had one shot on goal. Canada meanwhile had all five of their shots in the game on goal.

The United States pounded Peru in their opening game by a score of 16-0. However, they were unable to score a single goal against Canada.

Argentina is the only other country in the men’s field hockey tournament at the 2019 Pan American Games undefeated. On Thursday, Argentina defeated Trinidad and Tobago 6-0.

Peru will be Canada’s next opponent on Saturday. All eight teams from pool play advance to the quarterfinals with the winners moving to the semifinals. The champion of the Pan American Games will represent the Americas at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
