Team Canada is in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Davis Cup in Malaga, Spain. On Saturday, Alexis Galarneau of Laval, Quebec defeated Alejandro Tabilo of Chile 6-3, 7-6 in Group A action from Bologna, Italy. Interestingly, Tabilo is a native of Toronto, Ontario, but represents Chile because both of his parents are Chilean. Tabilo was actually part of Canada’s Junior Davis Cup team and did represent Canada on the International Tennis Federation Junior Circuit.

The Canadians entered their tie against Chile with a record of two wins and zero losses. All they needed to do was win one of three matches on Saturday. Galarneau came through with a massive victory.

Like earlier in the tournament, Galarneau won via an upset. Ranked 200th in the world, he defeated Tabilo, who is ranked 124th in the world. On Wednesday, Galarneau beat the 38th ranked player in the world, Lorenzo Sonego, 7-6, 6-4.

Chile can still qualify for the quarterfinals if they beat Canada on Saturday and if Sweden beats Italy on Sunday. Three other nations have qualified for the quarterfinals so far. They are Serbia, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands. The Serbians were led by world number one Novak Djokovic, who beat Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, 6-3, 6-4 on Friday from Valencia, Spain.
