Team Canada is in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Women’s World Water Polo Championship. On Saturday in the opening round of the knockout stage, Canada beat New Zealand 14-12.
Axelle Crevier of Montreal, Quebec led the Canadian team with a hat trick. Four Canadians had a multi-goal game with two goals each. They were Emma Wright of Lindsay, Ontario, Verica Bakoc of Toronto, Ontario, Serena Browne of Montreal, Quebec, and Shae la Roche of Calgary, Alberta. The three Canadians with one goal games were Hayley McKelvey of Delta, British Columbia, Kindred Paul of Spruce Grove, Alberta, and Marilia Mimides of Montreal.
With the win, Canada next plays Spain in the quarterfinals on Monday. The other quarterfinals have the United States versus Australia, Hungary versus the Netherlands, and Italy versus Greece.
It should be noted that there is almost a tournament within a tournament here. Also on the line is a spot at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. In order for Canada to qualify at the Olympic Games this summer, they need to finish in front of either Italy or Hungary. The Hungarians and Italians are undefeated to date. They are two of four nations undefeated so far. The other two are the United States and Spain.
