Canada reaches gold medal game of the 2023 Women’s World Hockey Championship

Team Canada is in the gold medal game of the 2023 Women’s World Hockey Championship in Brampton, Ontario. On Saturday in the semifinals, Canada beat Switzerland 5-1.

Canadian Olympic gold medalist Sarah Filler of Georgetown, Ontario led Team Canada with a hat trick. She was one of two Canadian players with a three-point game. The other was Canadian Olympic gold medalist Natalie Spooner of Scarborough, Ontario, who had three assists. The other two Canadian goal scorers were Olympic gold medalists Rebecca Johnston of Sudbury, Ontario and Jamie Lee Rattray of Ottawa, Ontario. Johnston won the gold medal at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, and the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. Spooner won a gold medal for Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, and the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. Rattray and Fillier won a gold medal for Canada at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.

In the other semifinal on Saturday, the United States pounded Czechia 9-1. The gold medal game will take place at 5 pm MT on Sunday. Switzerland will play Czechia for the bronze medal.

This is the 22nd Women’s World Hockey Championship. It is the 21st time that Canada and the United States are playing in the gold medal game.
