
Team Canada now has a record of four wins and two losses in the second round of the 2022 Women’s World Volleyball Championship in Lodz, Poland. Canada came through with a 25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 25-22 win over Thailand on Tuesday.
This is Canada’s first win in the second stage. They previously beat Germany, Kazakhstan and Bulgaria in first round Pool C play. Canada is now in fourth place in their pool out of eight teams, with the top four teams going to the quarterfinals.
This was an impressive result for Team Canada as Thailand beat Canada 25-16, 25-17, 25-17 in Volleyball Women’s Nations League action in Rimini, Italy on June 19, 2021, and then 25-19, 25-22, 26-24 in Volleyball Women’s Nations League action from Quezon City, Philippines on June 14, 2022. There is no doubt this Canadian National Women’s Volleyball team is maturing before our eyes.
In Canada’s win over Thailand, opposite hitter Alexa Gray of Lethbridge, Alberta led Canada in scoring with 25 points. Other Canadians who reached double figures in points were opposite hitter Kiera Van Ryk of New Westminster, British Columbia (24 points) and middle blocker Emily Maglio of Cranbrook, British Columbia (14 points). Gray led Canada with 22 attack points, and tied Jennifer Cross of Scarborough, Ontario for the lead in block points with three. Van Ryk led Canada with two aces. Canada will next play Turkey on Wednesday at 9:30 AM MT. That will be followed by games against Poland on Friday and the Dominican Republic on Saturday.
