Team Canada has won their first game of the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Edmonton, Alberta. On Monday, Canada defeated Switzerland by a score of 7-3. The tournament is an elite summer hockey showcase where hockey players under the age of 18 are featured.
It was a strong first period for Canada offensively as they scored five goals. Canada also showed a little bit of resiliency as they were down by a score of 2-1 with five minutes and 30 seconds into the game.
Two Canadian players had two goals each. They were centre Brock England of Red Deer, Alberta and Regina Pats centre Liam Pue of Langley, British Columbia. England’s second goal for Team Canada was shorthanded.
Three Canadian players had a multi-point game. Niagara IceDogs centre Ryerson Edgar of Holland Landing, Ontario and North Bay Battalion centre Camryn Warren of Vaughan, Ontario each had one goal and one assist for two points. Meanwhile, Pats centre Maddox Schultz of Regina, Saskatchewan had two assists. The other Team Canada goal scorer was Newfoundland Regiment centre Benjamin Veitch of St. John’s, Newfoundland.
In other action on Monday, the United States defeated Czechia 6-4, Finland beat Germany 5-2 and Sweden beat Slovakia 4-3 in overtime. The United States is the defending champion.
