Team Canada won their first group stage tie of the 2022 Davis Cup Finals on Tuesday from Valencia, Spain. It was an outstanding day for Vasek Pospisil of Vernon, British Columbia, who won both of his matches.
Pospisil defeated Seong-chan Hong 4-6, 6-1, 7-6. He then teamed up with Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, Quebec to beat Ji-sung Nam and Min-kyu Song 7-5, 5-7, 6-3. In the singles match, Pospisil was actually trailing Hong for most of the deciding set, including 4-1, before winning the match in a tiebreak.
Canada is in a group with Spain, South Korea and Serbia. The Canadians do not play again until Friday when they take on Spain. Canada closes out their Group B stage action on Saturday against Serbia.
In order for Canada to reach the knockout stage of the 2022 Davis Cup, they will have to be in the top two in Group B. That stage will go from November 22-27 in Malaga, Spain. If Canada were to win Group B, they would face the second place team from Group A in the quarterfinals on November 23. If Canada were to place second in Group B, they would face the winner of Group A in the quarterfinals on November 24. Group A consists of Sweden, Italy, Croatia and Argentina. Sweden beat Argentina 2-1 on Tuesday from Bologna, Italy.
