Cam Talbot sets NHL record for playing with nine teams as a goaltender

Cam Talbot of Caledonia, Ontario set the NHL record on Friday for playing with his ninth different National Hockey League team as a goaltender. He accomplished the feat while playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets in a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Talbot made 20 saves in the Blue Jackets win.

In Talbot’s career, he has played 227 games with the Edmonton Oilers, 82 games with the Minnesota Wild, 81 games with the Detroit Red Wings,  57 games with the New York Rangers, 54 games with the Los Angeles Kings, 36 games with the Ottawa Senators, 26 games with the Calgary Flames, four games with the Philadelphia Flyers and one game now with the Blue Jackets.

Interestingly, according to Rogers Sportsnet, the old record belonged to seven Canadian goalies. The Canadian goalies who have played with eight NHL teams were Gary Smith of Ottawa, Ontario, Sean Burke of Windsor, Ontario, Chad Johnson of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Alex Auld of Cold Lake, Alberta, James Reimer of Morweena, Manitoba, Ron Tugnutt of Scarborough, Ontario, and Curtis McElhinney of London, Ontario.

With the win, the Blue Jackets improved to a record of two wins and one loss for four points. Their other win this season came with Jet Greaves of Cambridge, Ontario in net. On October 1, the Blue Jackets beat the Buffalo Sabres 6-3.
