The Calgary Flames beat the Dallas Stars 3-1 in game five of the Western Conference Quarterfinals of the 2022 National Hockey League Stanley Cup Playoffs on Wednesday from the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta. With the win, the Flames have taken a three games to two lead in the best out of seven series.
Andrew Mangiapane of Bolton, Ontario and Mikael Backlund each had multi-point games. They each had one goal and one assist for two points. The other Flames player who scored was Trevor Lewis.
Mangiapane scored the game-winning goal. This was his second postseason game-winning goal. The first game-winner came on April 11, 2019 in a 4-0 Flames win over the Colorado Avalanche. That game will be best remembered as the only playoff win for Canadian Olympic gold medalist Mike Smith of Kingston, Ontario with the Flames. A gold medalist from the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Smith is now the netminder for the Edmonton Oilers at the age of 40.
Calgary can now eliminate the Dallas Stars from the playoffs in game six on Friday. Calgary is looking for its first series win in the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2015 when they beat the Vancouver Canucks in the Western Conference quaterfinals four games to two.
