The Calgary Flames are the last team in the 2022 National Hockey League playoffs to qualify for the second round. On Sunday night at the Sciotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, the Flames defeated the Dallas Stars 3-2 in overtime to win the best out of seven Western Conference quarterfinal series four games to three.
The Flames hero on Sunday, was their leading scorer, Johnny Gaudreau. The 28-year-old left-winger scored at 15:09 of the first overtime period from Elias Lindholm and Matt Tkachuk. The Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk line could be considered the best line in hockey today. In the regular season, they combined for 124 goals and 177 assists for 301 points. But it was just not on offense where the Flames’ number one line produced. They were also a combined +182.
One of the three Calgary goals on Sunday was scored by a Canadian. Tyler Toffoli of Scarborough, Ontario tied the game at one at 1:46 of the second period from defenseman Michael Stone of Winnipeg, Manitoba and Oliver Kylington. The other Flames goal scorer was Tkachuk. The Flames dominated the Stars when it came to shots on goal, as Calgary had 67, while Dallas had 28.
The Flames will next play the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference Semifinals. That series will commence on Wednesday. Remember, the Flames clobbered the Oilers 9-5, in a horrible game defensively and in terms of goaltending for Edmonton on March 26.
