Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ontario had an excellent first round at the 2021 Women’s United States Open. On Thursday at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, California, Henderson posted a score of -3, and finds herself one stroke back of 17-year-old American amateur Megha Ganne of Holmdel, New Jersey, and Melissa Reid of Derby, England. Ganne and Reid are both at -4.

Henderson, who is in a three-way tie for third place with Americans Angel Yin and Megan Khang, was tied for the lead as she made her way to the 18th hole. However, Henderson had a three-putt on the final hole, and came away with a bogey.

Henderson had six birdies and three bogeys in her score of -3. She birdied the first, fifth, eighth, 10th, 11th, and 16th holes, and bogeyed the second, 14th, and 18th holes.

Ten more golfers are under-par. American Lexi Thompson, China’s Shanshan Feng, and Yuka Saso of the Philippines are two strokes back at -2. There is also a seven-way tie for ninth place at -1 where you find Americans Marina Alex, Austin Ernst, Jennifer Kupcho, and Lauren Stephenson, along with South Korea’s Jin Young Ko and Jeongeun Lee6, and Thailand’s Wichanee Meechai. A Thai golfer won the first women’s major of 2021, as Patty Tavatanakit won the ANA Inspiration in April.
