Brittany Crew of Mississauga, Ontario set the Canadian record in the women’s shot put on Saturday. Crew threw the shot put 18.69 metres to finish in third place at the Hallesche Werfertage International Outdoor Track and Field Meet in Halle, Germany.

Fanny Roos of Sweden won the gold medal with a throw of 19.23 metres. Christina Schwanitz of Germany won the silver medal with a throw of 18.72 metres.

Crew’s previous Canadian record throw was 18.61 metres. That was set at the Virginia Grand Prix on April 26. What made Crew’s throw of 18.69 metres in Germany on Saturday extra important is because it met the Canadian Olympic qualifying standard for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Crew’s Canadian record throw of 18.61 metres also met the standard, however it did not come before May 1, which was the date the Olympic qualifying standard came into place.

This was Crew’s second third place finish in an international track and field competition in a week. At the Diamond League competition in Stockholm on Thursday, Crew threw 18.28 metres to finish behind Aliona Dubitskaya of Belarus (18.49 metres) and Roos at 18.36 metres. However Crew did not receive any Diamond League points in Stockholm because the event was not part of the Diamond League standings.
