Brandon McBride wins bronze in men’s 800 metres at Diamond League race in Rome

Brandon McBride of Windsor, Ontario won a bronze medal in a men’s 800 metre race at a Diamond League event in Rome on Thursday. It was McBride’s third career medal in the men’s 800 metres in Diamond League action. He previously won a silver medal in an event in London in 2016 and another silver medal in Monaco in 2017.

In the men’s 800 metre event in Rome on Thursday, McBride had a season best time of 1:43.90. Donovan Brazier of the United States won the gold medal with a time of 1:43.63. Nijel Amos of Botswana won the silver medal with a time of 1:43.65.

McBride reached the podium by 0.21 seconds. Ferguson Cheruiyot Rotich of Kenya finished in fourth place with a time of 1:44.11.

Technically it was a strong race for McBride. He had an excellent finish to claim his first Diamond League medal of the season.

This was the second men’s 800 metre race of the Diamond League in 2019 that counted towards the standings. Amos won the race in Doha on May 3. McBride meanwhile is in fourth place in the Diamond League men’s 800 metre standings with six points after two races. He is behind Amos (15 points), Brazier (14 points) and Emmanuel Kipkurui of Kenya (seven points).

The next men’s 800 metre Diamond League race will be in Rabat, Monaco on June 16. The bronze medal for McBride will give him confidence as he prepares for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
