Brad Jacobs wins 2019 Boost National in Newfoundland

Canadian Olympic gold medalist Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario won his second grand slam curling title of the season and sixth of his career on Sunday when he defeated four-time world champion Niklas Edin of Sweden 3-1 in the final of the 2019 Boost National from Conception Bay South, Newfoundland. Jacobs, who won a gold medal for Canada in men’s curling at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, previously won the 2019 Tour Challenge from Pictou County, Nova Scotia on November 10.

In the 2019 Boost National, Jacobs was in a three way tie for first place in Pool B with Edin and Brendan Bottcher of Edmonton, Alberta. All three teams had a record of three wins and one loss.

Jacobs lost his first match of the tournament as he was beaten 6-3 to Bottcher. He then put together six straight wins to take the title. He beat Yannik Schwaller of Switzerland 5-1, Edin 4-2 and Yuta Matsumara of Japan 4-3 in pool play, before beating Bottcher 4-3 in the quarterfinals, Canadian Olympic gold medalist Brad Gushue of St. John’s, Newfoundland 5-3 in the semifinal and Edin in the final. Gushue, who was playing on home ice, won the gold medal for Canada at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino.

The Boost National was the third of six grand slam events on the curling calendar this year. Matt Dunstone of Regina, Saskatchewan won the first grand slam of the season in North Bay, Ontario on October 27. The future grand slam events this season are the Meridian Canadian Open in Yorkton, Saskatchewan from January 14-19, the Princess Auto Players Championship in Toronto, Ontario from April 7-12 and the Humpty’s Champions Cup in Olds, Alberta from April 29-May 3.
