According to Rogers Sportsnet on Friday, Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios of Bayamon, Puerto Rico has been named the American League Pitcher of the Month. He had a record of three wins and two losses, with an earned run average of 1.19.

In 37 2/3 innings, Berrios gave up only 25 hits, five earned runs, 12 walks, and three home runs, to go along with 25 strikeouts, and a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 0.98. Of his six appearances were five quality starts.

Berrios won his first three decisions in the month. He defeated Seattle Mariners 5-2 on April 8, the Colorado Rockies 5-0 on April 14, and the San Diego Padres on April 20.

In his last two starts, Berrios lost two games to the Kansas City Royals. He was beaten 2-1 on April 25 and 4-1 on April 30. In both games Berrios pitched good enough to win, but the Blue Jays gave Berrios minimal run support. The lack of offense has been a major problem for the Blue Jays this season and last season.

Toronto is currently tied for last in the American League East with the Tampa Bay Rays. Both teams are at 15 wins and 18 losses with a winning percentage of .455. The Blue Jays have only won twice in their last 10 games.
