Bianca Andreescu upsets Naomi Osaka in the Netherlands

Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario, the 2019 Wimbledon champion, delivered a significant upset in the quarterfinals of the Rosmalen Grass Court Championships in s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands on Friday. Andreescu upset two-time grand slam champion Naomi Osaka of Japan, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 in the quarterfinals. In the third set tiebreak, Andreescu won 7-3. Osaka is a four-time grand slam champion as she has won the 2018 and 2020 United States Open and 2019 and 2021 Australian Open.

Andreescu is currently ranked 228th in the world. Osaka is 125th in the world. Osaka won their only prior meeting, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the 2019 China Open. Also this week, Andreescu beat Yue Yuan of China in the second round, 6-4, 6-4. Yuan is ranked 38th in the world.

Andreescu next faces Dalma Galfi of Hungary in the semifinals. Galfi is 138th in the world. This is their first meeting head-to-head.

On the men’s side in s-Hertogenbosch this past week, Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ontario reached the quarterfinals before losing to Alex de Minaur of Australia 7-5, 6-2 on Friday. However, he did have two key wins this past week. In the first round he beat the eighth seed, Jordan Thompson of Australia 6-3, 6-4. Then Raonic beat Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain, the 2019 Wimbledon semifinalist, by a score of 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 in the second round.
