Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario is in the third round of Wimbledon. On Wednesday, Andreescu defeated Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic, 6-3, 7-6 in the second round. Noskova was the second player Andreescu has beaten at Wimbledon so far as the lower seeded player. Ranked 176th, Andreescu beat the 62nd ranked player Jacqueline Cristian of Romania 6-4, 6-2 in the first round on Monday.
Andreescu, the 2019 United States Open champion, won 90% of her first serve points against Cristian. The key statistic in Andreescu’s win over Noskova was the fact Andreescu only had 11 unforced errors, while Noskova had 26.
Andreescu is one of two unseeded Canadians to date to knock out a seeded player. The other is Dennis Shapovalov of Toronto, Ontario. In the first round on Monday, Shapovalov, eliminated the 19th seed Nicolas Jarry of Chile 6-1, 7-5, 6-4. Shapovalov, the 2021 Wimbledon semifinalist, was never broken. He broke Jarry four times. Meanwhile, Shapovalov had nine aces, while Jarry only had five. The other key statistic in Shapovalov’s win was second serve winning percentage. Shapovalov was at 85% and Jarry was at 53%.
Next up for Andreescu is Jasmine Paolini of Italy, the seventh seed, and 2024 French Open finalist. Paolini beat Andreescu 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 in the third round of the French Open earlier this year. Next up for Shaopovalov is Daniel Altmaier of Germany. Altmaier is 80th in the world, and Shapovalov is 121st. This is their first meeting head-to-head.
Meanwhile, Leylah Annie Fernandez of Montreal, Quebec is still in the women’s singles draw of Wimbledon. The 30th seed beat Lucia Bronzetti of Italy 6-4, 6-3 in the first round, and will next play Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in round two. Fernandez reached the United States Open final in 2021, while Wozniacki won the Australian Open in 2018.
