Canadian women’s tennis star Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario is off to the third round of the 2022 Guadlajara Open. On Tuesday, Andreescu came up with an impressive upset as she knocked out the number 16 seed and two-time grand slam champion Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0, in the second round.

A major reason why Andreescu was victorious came down to the serve. Kvitova had eight double faults compared to five for Andreescu. There is no doubt the 22-year-old Canadian did a fine job when it came down to returning serve. Andreescu had 20 break point opportunities, of which she converted eight times.

This was the first time ever Andreescu had faced Kvitova. In 2014, Kvitova defeated Montreal’s Eugenie Bouchard 6-3, 6-0. This was the first time ever a Canadian had ever reached a grand slam singles final. Interestingly, Andreescu bageled Kvitova eight years after Kvitova bageled Bouchard.  Kvitova also beat Maria Sharapova of Russia, 6-3, 6-4 in the final of Wimbledon in 2011.

Andreescu’s first round win came on Monday. There she beat Jil Teichmann of Switzerland 6-2, 6-4.

Three Canadians won their first round match in Guadalajara. On Monday, Rebecca Marino of Toronto, Ontario defeated Ann Li of the United States 6-2, 7-6. Then on Tuesday, Bouchard beat American Kayla Day 7-5, 6-3.
