The British Columbia Lions made headlines in week one when they started 11 Canadians for their game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, British Columbia. Even though the Lions had plenty of Canadian content to begin the 2019 Canadian Football League regular season, they lost 33-23 to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The 11 Canadians who started for the Lions were offensive lineman Brett Boyko of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, offensive lineman Sukh Chungh of Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, slotback Jevon Cottoy of Calgary, Alberta, slotback Lemar Durant of Vancouver, British Columbia, offensive lineman David Foucault of Lasalle, Quebec, linebacker Jordan Herdman-Reed of Winnipeg, Manitoba, wide receiver Shaq Johnson of Brampton, Ontario, fullback David Mackie of Jackson’s Point, Ontario, offensive lineman Hunter Steward of Calgary, Alberta, defensive backs Dominique Termansen of North Vancouver, British Columbia and Anthony Thompson of Montreal, Quebec. In the game, Durant caught six passes for 75 yards and a touchdown, Johnson had one catch for seven yards and Cottoy had one catch for six yards. On defense, Termansen had four tackles and a forced fumble, and Herdman-Reed and Thompson had three tackles each.
In other action, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats beat the Saskatchewan Roughriders 23-17, the Ottawa Redblacks beat the Calgary Stampeders 23-28 and the Edmonton Eskimos beat the Montreal Alouettes 32-25. In CFL news, Tiger-Cats linebacker Simoni Lawrence has been suspended two games for his hit to the head on Roughriders quarterback Zach Collaros early in the first quarter Thursday in Hamilton.
