There will be two Canadian tennis players in the semifinals of the 2019 BNP Paribas Tennis Tournament in Indian Wells, California. Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ontario has reached the final four in the men’s draw and Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario has reached the semifinal in the women’s draw. Prior to the quarterfinal matchups, it should have come as no surprise that Raonic reached the semifinals, however Andreescu’s win could be considered unexpected.
Andreescu not only beat the 20th seed, Garbine Muguruza of Spain, she dominated her by a score of 6-0, 6-1. It could be considered the most impressive victory in Andresscu’s tennis career. Andreescu beat the two-time grand slam champion handily, as she broke the Spaniard five times and won 83% of the points on her first serve. Muguruza, who looked completely out of form, won only 41% of the points on her first serve.
Raonic meanwhile beat the Serbian rookie Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 6-4. It is the second time this season that Raonic beat Kecmanovic. He beat him in the second round of the Brisbane International, as a tuneup to the Australian Open, 6-3, 7-6, back on New Year’s Day.
Andreescu will now face the sixth seed, Elina Svitolina of the Ukraine on Friday. Raonic’s semifinal match will come Saturday against Austrian Dominic Thiem.
