According to Neil Davidson of the Canadian Press on Friday, Alphonso Davies of Edmonton, Alberta has been named the 2019-20 Bundesliga rookie of the year. The Bayern Munich winger had an outstanding 2019-20 campaign as he had three goals and four assists in 28 games.

The statistics may not be phenomenal, but one must realize that Davies played on a very talented Bayern Munich squad. The club won the Bundesliga this season, as it currently has 76 points (24 wins, four losses, and four draws).

According to Mike Decourcy of The Sporting News, there were two other Bundesliga players who were better statistically than Davies, but it was the Canadian that generated enough votes to win the award. Erling Haaland of Leeds, England had 11 goals and three assists in 13 games this season for Borussia Dortmund, while French forward Marcus Thuram of Parma, Italy, had 10 goals and eight assists in a full season for Borussia Monchengladbach.

Davies’ finest Bundesliga game came on May 23 in a 5-2 Bayern Munich win over Eintracht Frankfurt. In this contest, Davies had one goal and one assist.

Davies will not play on Saturday for Bayern Munich against SC Freiburg because he had a red card in Bayern Munich’s 1-0 win over Werder Bremen on Tuesday. Bayern Munich’s final game of the German season is June 27 against Vfl Wolfsburg.
