According to the Canadian Press on Wednesday, the 2020 Rogers Cup for men on the Association of Tennis Professionals Tour has been cancelled because of coronavirus. The event was scheduled to happen in Toronto,  Ontario from August 8-16 at the Aviva Centre at York University. The 2020 Rogers Cup for the women was cancelled on April 13.

The fact that the Rogers Cup has been cancelled is no surprise. It has been expected for quite some time. That is because the Canadian federal government has tried to impose strict travel restrictions. However, how productive the restrictions have been so far is up for debate.

Coronavirus continues to hit the province of Ontario very hard. There are currently 32,774 cases of coronavirus in Ontario, and 2,550 deaths. Ontario Premier Doug Ford extended emergency orders for the province on Wednesday.

However, what makes no sense from a health perspective, is that the ATP Tour has decided to resume the tennis season in mid-August in five cities worldwide that are coronavirus hot spots. They are Washington D.C., New York (will now host the Cincinnati Masters and the U.S. Open), Madrid, Rome and Paris.

In the United States, there are a whopping 406, 367 total cases of coronavirus in New York, with 31,046 deaths. In Washington D.C., there are 9847 cases of coronavirus and 523 deaths. In Spain, there are 291,763 cases and 27, 136 deaths. In Italy, there are 237,828 cases and 34, 448 deaths. In France, there are 158, 174 cases and 29, 575 deaths. The regions of the globe that the players will be playing have been absolutely hammered by coronavirus, and it is a good thing there are no spectators at this time.

It should be noted the 2021 Rogers Cup will have the men in Toronto and women in Montreal as was supposed to be scheduled in 2020. The events will happen after the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
