Aaron Brown wins gold in the men’s 200 metres at Diamond League event in Sweden

Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Aaron Brown of Toronto, Ontario won the gold medal in the men’s 200 metres at a Diamond League event in Stockholm, Sweden on Thursday. Brown, who posted a season best time of 20.06 seconds, won his second Diamond League gold medal of the season as he also placed first in the race in Shanghai, China on May 18 with a winning time of 20.07 seconds. However, the race in Shanghai was not part of the Diamond League standings, while the race in Stockholm was.

In Stockholm, Ramil Guliyev of Turkey won the silver medal with a time of 20.4 seconds. Jereem Richards of Trinidad and Tobago won the bronze medal with a time of 20.45 seconds. Brown reached the podium comfortably by a full half of a second. Alex Quinonez of Ecuador finished in fourth place with a time of 20.56 seconds.

This was the second of six Diamond League races this season. In the opening race in Doha, Brown had a time of 20.2 seconds to finish in third place. Guliyev won the gold medal with a time of 19.99 seconds and Quinonez won the silver medal with a time of 20.19 seconds. The other men’s 200 metre Diamond League races will be in Oslo, Norway on June 3, Rabat, Morocco on June 16, Lausanne, Switzerland on July 5 and London, Great Britain on July 21.

Brown is now second in the Diamond League standings with 14 points. Guliyev leads with 15 points.

Brown won a bronze medal in the men’s 4×100 metre relay at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro with Akeem Haynes of Calgary, Alberta, Brendon Rodney of Etobicoke, Ontario and Andre De Grasse of Scraborough, Ontario. Brown will use his medal in Stockholm as confidence as he prepares for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
