Wyatt Johnston records second career NHL hat trick

Dallas Stars centre Wyatt Johnston of Toronto, Ontario recorded his second National Hockey League career hat trick on Tuesday. He accomplished the feat in a 4-3 Stars win over the Vegas Golden Knights at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada.

Johnston had a natural hat trick as he scored the last three goals of the game. His first goal came at 5:04 of the second period from Roope Hintz shorthanded to pull the Stars within one goal. Johnston then tied the game at three at 11:54 of the third period from Hintz and Jason Robertson. Johnston’s overtime winner came into an empty net in overtime as Golden Knights goaltender Adin Hill was out of position. Hintz and Esa Lindell had the assists 20 seconds into the extra period.

Johnston’s first NHL hat trick came on March 5, 2024. The Stars beat the San Jose Sharks 7-6.

In 2024-25, Johnston has 14 goals and 28 assists for 42 points in 50 games. He is a +9 with 12 penalty minutes, 10 power play points, two shorthanded points, two game-winning goals, 131 shots on goal, 276 faceoff wins, 24 blocked shots, 31 hits, 22 takeaways, and 35 giveaways. Johnston’s other shorthanded point was an unassisted goal in a 6-2 Stars win over the Calgary Flames on December 8. The goal came at 4:26 of the first period and tied the game at one. Johnston’s other game-winning goal came on New Year’s Eve in a 4-2 Stars win over the Buffalo Sabres. Johnston put the Stars up 3-2 from defenseman Thomas Harley at 11:32 of the third period.

With the win, the Stars improve to a record of 32 wins, 17 regulation losses and one loss in extra time. They have 65 points and are in second place in the Central Division.
