University of New Brunswick wins 2024 University Cup

The University of New Brunswick Reds won the 2024 University Cup on Sunday from the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, Ontario. In the championship final of the Canadian University Sport Men’s Hockey Championship, the Reds defeated the University of Quebec Trois Rivieres Patriotes 4-0.

Samuel Richard of Ste-Catherine, Quebec made 23 saves for the shutout. He made eight saves in the first period, eight saves in the second period, and seven saves in the third period. Left winger Austen Keating of Guelph, Ontario had one goal and two assists. Keating’s three points led the Reds in scoring. Two more Reds had multi-point games. Centre Cody Morgan of Maple, Ontario, and Detroit Red Wings’s seventh round draft pick and centre Brady Gilmour of Grafton, Ontario, each had one goal and one assist for two points. The other Reds goal scorer was right winger  Isaac Nurse of Hamilton, Ontario. Isaac Nurse is the sister of Canadian Olympic gold medalist Sarah Nurse, who won gold in women’s hockey at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. 

It as a magical season for UNB. They had an undefeated season of 35 wins and zero losses, and became the first team ever at the University Cup Championship weekend not to give up a goal in three games according to usports.ca. In the quarterfinals, the Reds beat the University of Brock Badgers 4-0, and in the semifinals, beat Toronto Metropolitan University 7-0.

The Reds have now won 10 University Cup titles. They previously won in 1998, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2023.
