Week one is now in the books in the 2024 Canadian Football League regular season. Two Canadian wide receivers recorded touchdowns for winning teams. Tyson Philpot of Delta, British Columbia had two touchdown catches for the Montreal Alouettes in a 27-12 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Thursday from Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Meanwhile, Dejon Brissett of Mississauga, Ontario had one touchdown catch for the Toronto Argonauts in a 35-27 win over the British Columbia Lions on Saturday from Bank of Montreal Field in Toronto, Ontario.
Philpot’s first touchdown catch was for 14 yards from quarterback Cody Fajardo with four minutes and 12 seconds left in the first quarter. The converted touchdown put the Alouettes up 7-3. Philpot’s second touchdown catch was for 76 yards from Fajardo with eight minutes and 30 seconds left in the game. The unconverted touchdown put the Alouettes up 27-4. In the game, Philpot had 10 catches for 141 receiving yards, and led the Alouettes in both offensive categories.
Brissett meanwhile had a 26-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Cameron Dukes to begin the second half. The converted touchdown which came at the 3:15 mark of the third quarter put the Argonauts up 23-20 at the time. It would be a lead that Toronto would not relinquish. Brissett finished the game with three catches for 52 receiving yards.
