Toronto FC has qualified for the 2019 Major League Soccer Eastern Conference Finals. On Wednesday in the Eastern Conference semifinals, Toronto FC defeated New York City 2-1 from Citi Field, New York (home of Major League Baseball’s New York Mets).

It was a great game for attacking midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo of Seville, Spain. Pozuelo opened the scoring in the 47th minute and then broke a 1-1 tie in the 90th minute on a penalty kick. Ismael Tajouri-Shradi of Libya scored the only goal for New York.

Toronto now will have to wait and see where they will travel to for the Eastern Conference Final on October 30. They will play the winner of Atlanta United FC and the Philadelphia Union. Atlanta plays Philadelphia on Thursday evening from the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Toronto’s win over New York could have been considered an upset. In the 2019 MLS regular season standings, New York City FC had a record of 18 wins, six losses and 10 ties for 64 points. Toronto FC had 13 wins, 10 losses and 11 ties for 50 points. New York City FC also lost only one home game all season. That was 1-0 defeat to the Portland Timbers on July 7. Toronto FC only won four road games all season, but did have some confidence heading into their matchup against New York City FC. On March 29, Toronto dominated New York in a 4-0 win at BMO Field in Toronto.
