Week 14, the weekend after Labour Day, is now in the books. Three Canadians contributed to touchdowns on winning teams. Let’s take a look.
In the British Columbia Lions’s 37-23 win over the Montreal Alouettes on Friday, fullback David Mackie of Jackson’s Point, Ontario opened the scoring with a 23-yard touchdown run with three minutes and three seconds into the game. Mackie finished the game with four rushes for 33 rushing yards and one catch for nine yards. On the season, Mackie has 24 rushes for 101 rushing yards, and five touchdowns, along with six catches for 52 receiving yards.
Also in the Lions’s win, BC quarterback Nathan Rourke of Victoria, British Columbia had an 18 yard touchdown run and a 15 yard touchdown pass to Ayden Eberhardt. The touchdown pass put the Lions up 17-6 with three minutes and 23 seconds left in the first half. The touchdown run was with five minutes and 23 seconds left in the fourth quarter and put the Lions up 33-23. In the game, Rourke completed 22 of 28 passes for 304 passing yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions, along with two rushes for 27 rushing yards. On the season, Rourke completed 73 passes of 114 passes for 989 passing yards, four touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also has 13 rushes for 146 rushing yards and two touchdowns. With the win, the Lions are in a first place tie with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the West Division at seven wins and six losses.
Meanwhile in Edmonton on Saturday, in the Labour Day rematch, Edmonton Elks wide receiver Hergy Mayala of Montreal, Quebec caught a 60-yard touchdown from McLeod Bethel-Thompson in a 37-16 Edmonton win over the Calgary Stampeders. At the time, the touchdown put the Elks up 10-3, 19 seconds into the second quarter. Mayala finished the game with two catches for 71 yards. In 2024, Mayala has 41 catches for 503 receiving yards and five touchdowns. With the win, the Elks improved to five wins and eight losses.
