Summer McIntosh wins Commonwealth Games swimming gold in women’s 400m Individual Medley

Summer McIntosh of Toronto, Ontario won the gold medal on Friday in the women’s 400 metre individual medley at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. It was Canada’s only gold medal of the Commonwealth Games on the first full day of competition.

McIntosh posted a time of 4:29.01, which was a World Junior Record, Americas record, and Commonwealth Games record. McIntosh posted a time of 4:32.04 when she won the gold medal in the final of the 2022 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary on June 25. Katinka Hosszu of Hungary remains the current world record with a time of 4:26.36 at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. In the women’s 400 metre individual medley at the Commonwealth Games, Kiah Melverton of Australia won the silver medal with a time of 4:36.78, and Katie Shanahan of Scotland won the bronze medal with a time of 4:39.37.

Team Canada won three more medals on Friday. Canadian Olympic gold medalist Kelsey Mitchell of Brandon, Manitoba, Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Lauriane Genest of Montreal, Quebec, and Sarah Orban of Calgary, Alberta won the silver medal in the women’s team sprint cycling. Chris Kaji of Vancouver, British Columbia, Felix Dolci of Saint-Eustache, Quebec, Jayson Rampersad of Oakville, Ontario, Mathys Jalbert of Laval, Quebec, and Kenji Tamane of Laval, Quebec won the silver medal in the men’s team artistic gymnastics all-around. Meanwhile in the mixed 4×100 metre freestyle relay, the Canadian team that competed in the final and won bronze were Canadian Olympic gold medalist Maggie Mac Neil of London, Ontario, Canadian Olympic silver medalist Rebecca Smith of Red Deer, Alberta, Javier Acevedo of Scarborough, Ontario, and Joshua Liendo of Markham, Ontario.
