Edmonton Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner of Edmonton, Alberta recorded his second career National Hockey League shutout on Thursday. He accomplished the feat by making 43 saves in a 2-0 Oilers win over the Los Angeles Kings at the Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta.
Skinner made 11 saves in the first period, 13 saves in the second period, and 19 saves in the third period. Viktor Arvidsson, who was the NHL player of the week just this past week, led the Kings with seven shots on goal.
Offensively for the Oilers on Thursday, Edmonton got a game-winning first period goal from Evander Kane of Vancouver, British Columbia, and a shorthanded insurance goal in the third period from Connor McDavid of Richmond Hill, Ontario. For McDavid, it was his NHL-leading 61st goal of the season, NHL-leading 144th point, and fourth shorthanded goal, which is the second most in the NHL. McDavid only trails J.T. Miller of the Vancouver Canucks, who has five shorthanded goals. McDavid also scored his 300th NHL goal of his career, and the goal was ironically, the 300th goal the Oilers have scored this season.
In 2022-23 Skinner has a record of 25 wins, 14 regulation losses, and five losses in extra time. He has one shutout, a goals against average of 2.88 and a save percentage of .911.
Skinner’s previous shutout came last season as he made 20 saves in a 3-0 Oilers win over the San Jose Sharks on February 14, 2022. Ridiculously, it was the last NHL game Skinner played for the Oilers in 2021-22.
With the win, the Oilers improved to a record of 44 wins, 23 regulation losses, and nine losses in extra time for 97 points. They are in second place in the Pacific Division and two points back of the Vegas Golden Knights.
