According to Rogers Sportsnet on Tuesday, the Dallas Stars have named Peter DeBoer of Dunnville, Ontario their new head coach. The Stars are the fifth National Hockey League team DeBoer has coached for following the Florida Panthers, New Jersey Devils, San Jose Sharks and Vegas Golden Knights.
In 1015 regular season games, DeBoer has a record of 513 wins, 379 losses, and 123 losses in extra time, for a winning percentage of .566. He also has coached 123 playoff games, and has a record of 68 wins and 55 losses for a winning percentage of .553.
Twice DeBoer has coached in the Stanley Cup Finals. In 2012, while with the Devils, New Jersey lost in six games to the Los Angeles Kings. Then in 2016, while with the San Jose Sharks, the Sharks lost in six games to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
DeBoer takes over from Rick Bowness of Moncton, New Brunswick. Bowness resigned at the end of the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs. We do not know at this time if Bowness has officially retired or not.
The Stars made the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs but lost to the Calgary Flames in seven games in the Western Conference quarterfinals. They do have some positive building blocks, but also may find it tough because they play in a very difficult Central Division, which seems to be more talented at this time than the Pacific Division.
