Sidney Crosby receives Order of Canada

Canadian Olympic gold medalist Sidney Crosby of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia received the Order of Canada on Thursday according to Richard Raycraft of CBC News. The Pittsburgh Penguins captain won a gold medal for Canada in men’s hockey at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. At the Olympic Winter Games a dozen years ago, Crosby scored the biggest goal in Canadian hockey history. He scored the overtime winner for Canada in the gold medal game in men’s hockey against the United States in a 3-2 Canada win. The Crosby goal gave Canada its 14th gold medal at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, a Winter Olympic record at the time.

In addition to winning two Olympic gold medals, Crosby has won three Stanley Cups as a player (2009, 2016, 2017), two Rocket Richard Trophies (2010, 2017), two Conn Smythe Trophies (2016, 2017), two Hart Trophies (2007, 2014), and two Art Ross Trophies (2007, 2014). In 1143 NHL regular season games, Crosby has 536 goals and 916 assists for 1452 points.

Other Canadian sportspeople who were honoured were curler Colleen Jones, soccer player and Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Karina LeBlanc, and cycling manufacturer Felix Gauthier. Jones of Halifax, Nova Scotia, won six Scotties Tournament of Hearts (1982 in Regina, Saskatchewan, 1999 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, 2001 in Sudbury, Ontario, 2002 in Brandon, Manitoba, 2003 in Kitchener, Ontario, and in 2004 in Red Deer, Alberta). She also won two Women’s World Curling Championships (2001 in Lausanne, Switzerland and in 2004 in Gavle, Sweden).

LeBlanc of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, was the Canadian women’s soccer goalie from 1998 to 2015. She was part of the Canadian team that won a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.  Gauthier of Chicoutimi, Quebec, founded Cycles Devinci, which makes not only regular bikes, but mountain bikes as well.
